Are you aware that the tourism sector contributes approximately 5 percent to global anthropogenic CO2 emissions worldwide? One of the main contributors being particularly from a transportation and accommodation perspective. It is with this in mind and against this background that the Directorate for Responsible Tourism at the National Department of Tourism (NDT) have developed a voluntary accord to encourage the department and the tourism sector work together to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases within the industry. The NDT will provide strategic and political direction to guide the implementation of climate change action in the tourism sector. The time has come for the tourism sector, among others, to take the lead in implementing concrete measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases throughout the tourism value chain. Please take careful note that the implementation of the voluntary accord will be a continuous process.
